A guide on how to care for hair extensions

If you had thin hair a few years ago and craved thick, luscious hair, there wasn't much you could do about it. But with the introduction of hair extensions that grow thick, long hair has become an achievable dream for every woman. Whether you're adding length to short hair and making it look longer, or adding much-needed volume to sparse, limp hair, hair extensions have come to the rescue of many desperate women. Human hair extensions can be very expensive depending on the quality and needs. In order for them to last long and look their best, you need to know how to take care of hair extensions.

To do

  • Use a soft bristle hairbrush to brush your hair extensions. Always start brushing from the bottom and work your way up.
  • Wash your hair daily. Sweat, dirt, and dust can build up on your hair, making your extensions knotty, tangled, or loosening their hold.
  • Use the appropriate and best combinations of shampoo and conditioner. Most hair extensions come with product recommendations. Try to follow that and use the products that go with your extensions. Your regular shampoo may be too harsh for the extensions, fraying and wearing out with every wash. This is one of the most important tips for hair extensions.
  • Apply a deeply nourishing hair mask once a week to keep your hair and extensions looking and feeling smooth.
  • Use a heat protectant spray before straightening or curling your hair. Using a straightener on unprotected hair can cause the hair extensions to break or worse, burn themselves.

Not

  • Leave hairspray or other hair styling products on your hair overnight. They can create buildup that over time leads to the loosening of the hair extension ties.
  • Apply conditioner to the roots of the hair as this can cause the hair extensions to go limp and slip off.
  • Use your hair dryer on a very high level. Also, try not to use your blow dryer too close to your roots. You don't want to risk damaging your hair extension ties in any way.
  • Use non-recommended shampoos and conditioners. There's a reason your stylist recommends certain products. It will be a shame after so much money to remove the hair extensions yourself. If you want to remove it, have an expert do it. Make an appointment with your stylist to remove them without damaging your hair.
  • Use bleach or other such chemical products on your hair. Your extensions are more fragile than your real hair. So keep that in mind and avoid using chemical products that could irreversibly damage the extensions.
  • Use homemade hair masks. While natural homemade hair masks can be great for real hair, they can become tangled and damage the hair extensions. So don't use them and stick to the hair care products recommended by your stylist.

Hair extensions are not a permanent solution to your hair needs and wants. But with the right care, you can ensure that they last a very long time and enjoy the results.
