I have an exciting summer giveaway for you! I recently received samples of Fat Leaf Water, a new sports hydration drink, and was shocked at how well it worked to cure my dehydration.
The brand generously offered to give a happy Sharethelooks reader a 12-pack plus an Amazon gift card worth $ 50!
We all need more moisture, but I REALLY need it!
So just to give you some background information … I have something called POTS, which means my blood pressure is usually low and I have to eat a ton of salt to keep from fainting.
I also have an aldosterone deficiency, so I always take electrolyte powder and even salt pills to keep up. When it is hot, my symptoms are worse and I was very excited to find Fat Leaf Water.
When I'm dehydrated, my fingertips look cropped as if I just got out of the bath. When I drink electrolytes, they fill up! Here is a before and after. It's a hot day today and I'm moderately dehydrated – nothing crazy. But you can see my fingers flop about 30 minutes after drinking fat leaf water!
So is fat leaf water better than electrolyte powder?
I have the feeling that Fat Leaf Water works better and faster than my normal electrolyte powder. I think that's because it's made from prickly pear. If a plant knows how to stay hydrated, it's a cactus!
Prickly pear cactus has anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, electrolytes (magnesium, calcium and phosphorus), vitamins, minerals and the amino acid taurine. It's often used to prevent and treat hangovers, and that would actually be a great use of this drink!
The drink is gluten-free, vegan and made from natural ingredients. The bottles are BPA free. In contrast to coconut water, all of the ingredients in Fat Leaf Water come from the United States and Mexico, which means less emissions waste and a more environmentally friendly product. They also plan to donate 1% of their profits to Conservation International.
Are you exercising in the heat, brother?
If you are a person who lives in summer, you probably need more moisture. But if you're a person who trains in the summer, you definitely need more moisture. Taurine is an added benefit as it can help your heart and muscles.
Last weekend I took some fat leaf water to my in-laws in Los Angeles Valley to host a homemade pizza party on July 4th. Because we are socially distant, we had to stay outside all the time, which meant that there was no air conditioning in the 96-degree heat.
Due to the health problems I mentioned (and probably my genetics), I DO NOT tolerate heat well. I feel dizzy and confused and I just feel super uncomfortable. The in-laws offered me coconut water, which is great, but it just doesn't do the job that an electrolyte drink does. I had the entire case of Fat Leaf Water with me (to take photos for this post!), So I drank something and offered it to them. I think it saved me from heat exhaustion!
How does it taste?
There are three flavors – Rimrock Red (my favorite!), KeyLime Mirage and Mojave Citrus. Rimrock Red is the cutest in my opinion and I would buy a case of it myself in the future!
These don't taste like Gatorade because they're not full of sugar. If you take care of your sugar, KeyLime has the lowest sugar (6 grams for the entire bottle). However, be aware that extreme dehydration requires a little sugar (this can help your body absorb the electrolytes more efficiently).
The other flavors are 16 grams, which isn't particularly low, but it's not Gatorade-high (which is about 34 grams for 20 ounces).
Overall, I think KeyLime and Mojave Citrus are a bit bitter for my taste, but they work so well to keep me hydrated that I don't mind. The Rimrock Red aroma is really delicious and one that I would only drink for the taste alone.
