A renovation is almost always a costly expense no matter where you go. From choosing new clothes to a haircut to nail care or teeth whitening, it all takes time and money.
However, some parts of the world will inevitably offer higher quality services than others (as well as a better offering). But which places are the best? We decided to answer this question and find out which of the American cities are best suited for renovation.
A variety of data points were recorded:
• Average cost for hairdressers
• Average mani-pedi costs
• Density of the dental clinic
• Average quality of the dentist
• Average quality of the beauty salon
• Average quality of the clothing store
• Average quality of the jewelry store
We have examined the largest cities in the United States for all of the above. Once the data was collected, we used Minmax normalization to give each city a standardized rating of 10 for each data point. We then used the averages of each city to make a final ranking. Which do you think ended up in 1st place?
Overall, Washington's Seattle is the best city to redesign. The city performed well in almost every category and even came first in average mani-pedi costs, average costs for dental clinics and average ratings of clothing stores. The only data point where the city performed poorly is the average cost for hairdressers, where they finished 23rd.
Next we have Portland in 2nd and San Francisco in 3rd. Both cities achieved good results, although the former performed significantly better than the latter in terms of average hairdressing costs and clothing store ratings.
The rest of the top ten also performed well. Interestingly, three of the ten largest cities are in California (San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles).
At the other end of the ranking, Las Vegas has the lowest total score. Aside from the highest average mani-pedi cost, it has the second lowest dental clinic density, the second lowest average rating of beauty salons, and underperformed in almost all other data points, apart from jewelry store ratings, which actually did pretty well.
Nevada's largest city is followed by San Jose, which despite the cheapest average mani-pedi costs does not do well in terms of average costs for hairdressers, density of dental clinics, average ratings for beauty salons and average ratings for clothing stores.
New York could hardly stay ahead and was at the bottom of the table in terms of average hairdressing costs and density of dental clinics. That said, he managed to get decent results for his average dentist rating and average jewelry rating.

Next, let's take a closer look at each of the factors used in the study.
Hair stylist costs
We started our study by examining the average cost of professional hairstyle for your hair in every city, according to Thumbtack.
Indianapolis is the city with the lowest average cost for a professional hairdresser, followed by Oklahoma City and Louisville. Three cities in Texas did very well in this category, with Houston, Austin and San Antonio all ranking top ten.
After the hairdressers, we went to the average cost of finishing your nails. Each city's results are based on the average cost in its respective US region. It uses data compiled by Square Appointments.
The West Coast states (California, Oregon, and Washington) have the cheapest average mani-pedi cost in the US ($ 37). The South Atlantic states are only $ 38 behind, and the mountain states have the most expensive average mani pedis.
San Francisco's high rank makes sense given its performance in another of our studies, "The World's Most Beautiful Cities", in which SF was ranked the ninth largest city in the world with the highest salon content.
Density of the dental clinic
Next, we examined the number of free and affordable dental clinics in each city per capita for people who might consider cosmetic dental treatments during a renovation.
Seattle has the highest density of dental clinics in any city in this study. In terms of the total number of dental clinics, the city achieved the highest number, although with a total of 23 clinics it was only the 18th largest city in the USA (closely followed by San Diego at 22 and Philadelphia at 19).
Beauty salon quality
It would be a thorn in our side to ignore the quality of each city's various beauty shops and services. We therefore went to the average ratings of beauty salons in each city. This data is based on the average rating results of up to 60 randomly selected beauty salons from each city using the Google Places API.
The city with the highest rated beauty salons is Louisville with an average of 4.7269 out of 5 places. Portland and Jacksonville followed in second and third place.
Clothing store quality
After reviewing the average rating of each city's beauty salon, we moved on to clothing store ratings.
Seattle has the best clothing stores with an average score of 4.4727 out of 5. This is a little surprising considering that some stores in downtown Seattle have had problems in recent years – for example, the Seattle office in late 2019 Macy's announced the impending closure after 90 years of doing business.
Seattle is followed by Detroit and Nashville, which produce almost identical results (which differ only by a ten-thousandth point).
Jewelry store quality
Next, we gathered the rating data for the jewelry stores in each city.
Chicago, America's third largest city, has the highest average rating for jewelry stores, followed by Philadelphia and San Francisco. Many of the cities with the highest rated jewelry stores are also among the top rated clothing stores, including Chicago, Denver, Portland, Dallas, Seattle and Baltimore.
Finally, we collected the data for the average rating results of the dentists in each city.
Texas dominated in this last category and made five appearances in the top ten: Dallas took 1st place while Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston filled the rest of the top 5. Obviously, the Lone Star State is the place to go if you are looking for quality dental work.
We used Minmax normalization to give each city a score of ten for each data point. We then averaged these results to get a higher score so we can find the best city to redesign.
The following formula was used to generate normalized ratings for each data point:
Result = (x-min (x)) / (max (x) -min (x))
During this study, we looked at factors that we believe are relevant to people who are looking to revise them. Let us know which data points you would have included in the following comments. If you would like to see the full data and our sources, click here.
