Tough Yet Sexy Looks from GHOST IN THE SHELL – THE YESSTYLIST - Asian Fashion Blog

An action girl is not afraid to jump into battle – she actually welcomes it. Major Motoko from the Japanese cyberpunk classic Ghost in the Shell from 1995 is a permanent example with her legendary, shaggy bob, her industrial-chic outfits and her familiarity with a variety of firearms. Violent, independent and yet coolly thoughtful, she navigates through the ultra-networked, dystopian landscape of New Port City in 2029 as a female commander of an otherwise exclusively male public security team and faces the deadliest enemies without breaking a sweat. Motoko maintains a core of femininity, even though it surpasses her male counterparts, and proves that you can be dressed in full combat gear and still be sexy without a doubt.

Action girl style as interpreted by Major Motoko

One of her most iconic looks is a bulletproof vest over a skin-tight body in light gray, paired with thigh-high combat boots and black gloves. It's a look that's clean, simple, and deadly – her uniform when the crisis breaks out, as is increasingly the case throughout the film. Sensual elements creep into her largely black-gray wardrobe, from a split tank top to a flowing, bat-like black jacket to an ensemble of garter and stockings that show off her exquisitely constructed legs. The perfect balance between practicality and style continues in her private life. Outside the battlefield, Motoko can be seen in a range of simple but effective outfits, from loose-fitting, desperate t-shirts with combat pants to a boxy, oversized jacket in earth tones that exudes androgynous energy. Effortlessly nervous and free of romantic decorations, Motoko's adoption of utilitarian chic is still relevant today, similar to her considerations of the "spirit in the machine".

How to make Motoko's style your own

Here I present two different styles that are inspired by Motoko's dark, moody, but also extremely practical wardrobe – a "ready to fight" outfit and a more casual everyday outfit.

1. Alternative military

Motoko himself would approve of this figure-hugging black t-shirt with a square neckline, which offers a lot of energy in street style and at the same time brings out all the curves. Pair it with provocative, high-waisted shorts made from raw, faded black denim with side cutouts and buckle straps. Put on this black coat with side buttons and subtle military vibrations for extra armor. The simple, structured shape and the padded fabric reflect the bulletproof vest from Motoko. Button up a turtleneck sweater effect or wear it with an open collar for a softer, more feminine look. To enhance the punky glamor, cement your look with lace-up boots that are decorated with multiple buckles – a real action girl sprints even in sky-high heels over distances! Finally, counter the dark, cool vibrations with lavender waves, a peppier alternative to Motoko's signature bob. His fairytale punk aesthetic fully lives up to Motoko's mysticism and at the same time honors classic anime hairstyles.

2. Off-duty chic

Anchor your outfit with this boxy corduroy jacket with fleece lining in a warm biscuit brown that is reminiscent of Motoko's staple. Wear it over a tight-fitting t-shirt with a V-neck and a daring collar and combine it with narrow satin trousers that are reminiscent of Motoko's tried and tested body – they lengthen your legs and fit comfortably around the waist. For shoes, nothing is more ideal for an action-packed lifestyle than this pair of restrained faux leather boots with chunky heels in light brown that offer a funky update to your favorite walking shoes. Motoko is probably too focused on her mission (and philosophizing about her cyborg identity) to apply makeup, but I think this metallic silver matte lipstick would go well with her subtly Gothic aesthetic. It's the kind of shade you don't have to wait until Halloween to break out, especially if you want to add dark undertones to an otherwise bright, casual outfit. For the finishing touch, I chose a canvas crossbody with a classic camouflage pattern, an allusion to Motoko's military background. It's big enough to store all your important things and more. It is a must for people with a mobile lifestyle like Motoko who need to charge from the plane to the battlefield to the safe house.

Rebirth of an action girl

It's a price to pay to be an action girl. Motoko suffers terrible injuries when her team gets deeper into a dark web of government conspiracies, but her "mind" survives to fight another day. With a jump she is back in the game, armed with a new body and this dark seductive wardrobe!
